A Little Art Music

by Suzanne on March 1, 2010

Often when I’m painting I like to listen to something to help direct the mood. What I mean by that is that, if I’m doing something soft or sweet in images, I like to listen to something romantic. Perhaps I’ll put the Pride and Prejudice DVD on in the background (BBC version of course), or some beautiful and gentle classical music. If I’m going for a more dramatic feel, then something more dramatic. Like Lord of the Rings or something sophisticated will call for jazz. I don’t know that I even particularly watch or listen with any great concentration. It really kind of moves to the background and I focus on the painting. But what it does do is help get me into the appropriate place for a particular image. I have had a lot of things happening of late, but things are improving drastically. A very patient client has been waiting for the finishing touches on her painting, and to get me into the cheerful mood I wanted to be in for her painting music I put on a little Fred Astaire and an Oldies mix that I made. And wow what a difference it has made in how the painting is coming along. I would even venture to say that my brush strokes are “happier”. So if ever your stuck and cant quite get that mood your going for, try a little music. Fred might just help you out!

I’ve been thinking a lot about how cheery this music is too. I have different kinds of music that I listen too at different times of the year (i.e. jazz in the summer and new year, classical/Mozart/impressionists in the light, bright spring). I think that this vintage music is so cheery, it’s perfect for mud season.
