Sketch Book For The Week

Well, here are my sketch book drawings for this week. It’s been a life busy week and I’ve not been able to paint as much as I would like, but that is the beauty of a sketchbook; it is there when you don’t have the time to devote to a painting session. I am continuing with the heavies and also focus a little on practicing the anatomy of the horse. If you have the skeletal and musculature info of the horse down then you can build a horse , or human, etc., from the inside out and it will strengthen any drawing or painting.

I’m not claiming to be perfect at it yet, but the first step is know that you need to know it, right?! ;-) And so, the first sketch isn’t much to look at but I thought I would show my process of drawing from the inside out. It may look like scribbles but there is anatomy there. The other thing this kind of refresher does is help me solve problems I may be having on a painting. When something just doesn’t look right it is good to go back to basics. I find that usually solves the problem.

Sketch of the anatomy of the horse

As you can see I started with the skeletal structure of a regular sport horse type body.

Then drew the musculature on top of that to fill out the body.

Facial features and hair come last.

sketch: draft horse pulling Though he’s got no harness, I was trying to think about the angles and muscle strain that a horse pulling strongly would have.
sketch draft horse side view Here I was thinking about starting with a common horse and filling it out the draft horse size. Again a comparison between the lighter and heavier horses.
sketch of a horse Just a sketch.
